First GPHIL post
While I was reading the Allegory of the Cave for class, I was kind of freaked out and began thinking how disturbing it is that the influence that the beliefs of the media and peers can be so strong that they can "chain" us down and can actually impact our freedom. However, after thinking about it and after some class discussion, I have come to the conclusion that there are enough people expressing different beliefs and enough sources showing different view points that I am not chained down in my freedom of thought and beliefs. While I am not so naive as to believe that media and society has no impact on my world view whatsoever, I also think that as long as people research whats really going on in the world and don't just take what we hear in the news and read in the newspaper and believe it without questioning it then we have the power to find out the truth we just have to put in the effort.

I agree that alot of people don't know because they just don't do the research. But also some people don't do the research because no body has really stressed to them the importance of gaining as much knowledge as possible, instead of just going with the flow. It's sort of a generation curse...their parents haven't passed on the ability for them to make better decisions in life or to search beyond appearance so they don't pass it on to their kids either. I know it's sad but true. I grew up in this type of environment and not to make excuses for them but some people are truly still living in a cave and have know idea that there is sunlight on the outside. Now the people that have the resources but don't take advantage that's another story.
I agree with both of you. I think that people aren't entirely chained down by society, but a lot of times we don't make the effort that we can anyway.
I have a split opinion about the Allegory of the Cave. I think it’s very important for people to search for knowledge and find out the “right” answers. I also think that if everyone in our society knew the real answers, there could be much discord. Society runs on the fact that so many people just follow the crowd and believe what they are told. The ones who do search for the knowledge and don’t just accept what is given to them, are the ones who will someday end up in some sort of control. It just seems that either way, it’s like a big circle and things will stay the same
